1928 Harry Heilmann Lucky Strike Advertising Sign
Detroit Tigers star outfielder Harry Heilmann goes to bat for Lucky Strike Cigarettes in this colorful 1928 advertising sign. The sign features the large Lucky Strike logo, along with an illustrated likeness of Heilmann in a batting pose. Heilmann's glowing endorsement, printed to the right of his image, reads "I smoke Luckies because they are the best." As noted in print along the top border, Heilmann was the "World's Leading Batter" at the time of this advertising campaign, and that statement was not just Madison Avenue hyperbole. Heilmann led the Major Leagues in hitting in 1927 with a .398 average, making him an ideal candidate to promote the company's cigarettes. This sign, which was intended for display in trolley cars, was one in a series of five similar Lucky Strike advertisements, each of which featured a prominent baseball star. The sign (20x10.25", visible dimensions) displays several moderate tears that have been professionally restored. Excellent in its overall appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 30x20 inches. Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
