1928 Knute Rockne and Pop Warner Signed All American Designation Certificate (Beckett LOA)

1928 Knute Rockne and Pop Warner Signed All American Designation Certificate (Beckett LOA)

Presented is an original 1928 All American Designation Document signed by legendary college football coaches Knute Rockne, who coached at Notre Dame from 1917-1931, and Pop Warner, who coached at a number of colleges but is most famous for his coaching at Carlisle Indian Industrial School. The Document names Irvine "George" Phillips of the University of California as a '28 All American. The document is also signed by Tad Jones, who was the head football coach at Syracuse University (1909-10) and at Yale University (1916-17 and 1920-27). The document measures approx. 14x15". In 1928, the Inter-Sectional Board of Football Coaches, consisting of Rockne, Warner, and Jones, met to choose who would be on the All America Football Team of 1928. The original document measures 14x15". It reads, "The Inter-Sectional Board of Football Coaches Tad Jones, Knute Rockne and Glenn Warner meeting to consider current records of all amateur football players and having examined the recommendations of competent observers including writers, coaches and personal representatives in all sections of the United States, hereby designates George Phillips/University of California as a member of the All America Football Team of 1928. Approved at New York. December 2, 1928 by Tad Jones/Glenn V. Warner/Knute Rockne [with each of the three foregoing names as signatures]. In the bottom left corner of the document is a gold colored seal that most likely originally read, "The Inter-Sectional Board of Football Coaches," but the top half of the seal is missing and the bottom half of the seal reads," Board of Football Coaches." Extending from the bottom of the seal are a red and a blue ribbon. Rockne was an All American at Notre Dame as an end, and Rockne and the Notre Dame quarterback, Gus Dorais, made great use of long forward passes to defeat Army on Nov. 1, 1913, at West Point. It was the first time that extensive use of the forward pass occurred in a major college game. As the head coach at Notre Dame from 1918 through 1931, his Notre Dame teams won three National Championships. Rockne coached the famous George Gipp (Win one for the Gipper) and Curly Lambeau on his 1918 team and the Four Horsemen on his National Champion 1924 squad. Glenn "Pop" Warner coached at seven colleges. He won three National Championships at Pittsburgh and another National Championship at Stanford. He was an innovator, creating the single- and double-wing formations and the three-point stance. He coached the legendary Jim Thorpe at Carlisle, and he was involved in a youth football program that became Pop Warner Football. The document is attractively matted and framed at 19x24". There is a small chip in the lower right corner of the frame. The document has signs of liquid damage to the right-hand side which have been minimized with the nice matting and framing. None of the signatures are affected, and the signatures all grade nicely. The signed document comes with a LOA for the signatures from the Beckett Authentication Service. The offering represents a wonderful opportunity to obtain the signatures of two iconic football coaches on the same document.
