1928 Pottsville Maroons NFL Presentation Fob
In the early years of the NFL, many franchises were from very small cities, Pottsville being one example, and Green Bay another - the only anachronistic small town to survive in the NFL until today. Located in Pennsylvania coal country, Pottsville was about to lose its franchise to big-city Boston, so the fans made the players going-away presents: Fobs, black and polished to a shine, appropriately made from anthracite coal. Reads "Pottsville Maroons, T. Latone, Back 1928". Latone was a star, the highest career scorer for Pottsville, and the fob is such a memorable, poignant farewell from these coal-region fans. The Pottsville Maroons are perhaps the most significant "cult" franchise in NFL history and this is from their final season. In fact, they are considered to have been robbed of being the first NFL championship team when they were suspended by Commissioner Joe Carr before the end of the 1925 season. To this day the Pottsville area burns in bitterness over this slight. But the result has been that all of the original Pottsville Maroons memorabilia are treated by collectors as precious gems. And as you know diamonds are basically pressurized coal.
