1928 Walter Johnson Type I Baseball Photo

1928 Walter Johnson Type I Baseball Photo

Here is Hall of Famer Walter Johnson warming up as a Newark Bear. "The Big Train" won 417 Major League games, all with the Washington Senators, second only to Cy Young's 511 in MLB history. This photo was taken in 1928 when Johnson, living in Millburn, New Jersey, was managing the nearby Newark Bears of the Class AA International League. The Bears went 81-84 and finished seventh. These Newark Bears were an unaffiliated team in 1928. Later, in the 1930s, they became a farm team of the New York Yankees and produced some of the most talented teams in minor league history. Johnson only pitched in one official game that season, walking the only batter he faced and not getting a decision. But he had earned his manager's stripes, and the next season he was back in the American League, managing the Washington Senators. Double weight. Photo is 8x10". A few minor spots, otherwise good condition.
