1929 Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig at Spring Training Original Negative
Displayed is an original 1929 negative showing Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig at spring training with the New York Yankees, most likely at the team's spring training base in St. Petersburg, Florida. Each of the sluggers is in his New York Yankees' uniform. except for the jersey and hat. Perhaps they were waiting to hit in batting practice. The '29 Yankees had a record of 88-66 in the American League, finishing in second place behind Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics. On that '29 team, the Yankees had seven future Hall of Fame players: catcher Bill Dickey, first baseman Gehrig, second baseman Tony Lazzeri, outfielder Earl Combs, outfielder Ruth, and pitchers Herb Pennock and Waite Hoyt. Plus, the regular Yankee shortstop was Leo Durocher, who later made the Hall of Fame as a manager. The '29 team was managed by Hall of Fame manager Miller Huggins. In the '29 season, Ruth batted .345, with 46 home runs and 154 RBIs. That season Gehrig hit .300, with 35 home runs, and 125 RBIs. The original negative measures 3.9x4.9". There are four small places where the black coating of the negative has worn off, leaving an image made while using the negative with corresponding white spots where there are holes in the negative. Also included is a 3.5x4.25" paper copy of how the negative looks when developed. The negative exhibits some indecipherable writing in the upper left corner. The offered Ruth/Gehrig negative provides a relaxed, informal view of these two immortals. Pleasenote: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes onlyand does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.
