1929 Carl Mays Photograph (PSA Type I)
Original Type I photograph capturing infamous pitcher Carl Mays as a member of the New York Giants in 1929. The closeup image pictures Mays as he gazes directly into the camera while posing in front of the dugout. An "Associated Press" credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with a paper news caption dated "9/27/28." A date stamp of "Oct 2 1928" also appears on the reverse. Both the date stamp and the date on the news caption are curious, because Mays played the entire 1928 season with Cincinnati. He didn't join the Giants until 1929, which marked the final season of his Major League career. Mays was one of the top pitchers in baseball for most of his career, winning twenty or more games five times, but he will always be remembered today as the pitcher who served up the fateful pitch that killed Ray Chapman in 1920. Chapman's death remains the only on-field fatality in Major League Baseball history. The photo (6x8") displays a diagonal crease in the lower left quadrant. Very Good condition. Encapsulated by PSA as Type I Authentic.
