1929 New York Celtics Jersey Worn by Francis Meehan

1929 New York Celtics Jersey Worn by Francis Meehan

Yes, the 1929 New York Celtics. The fact is, the guy who wore this unimaginably rare, stunning kelly green and white knit jerseys with the shamrock logo back in the 1929 season did so before Red Auerbach was old enough to be bar-mitzvaed . These Celtics played their home games in Manhattan's Central Opera House when they weren't barnstorming around the hinterlands. Actually, they really weren't the "original" Celtics at all -- there was an even earlier team called the New York Celtics of the 1910s, who disbanded in 1918, whereupon promoter James Furey put together a team of hardbitten pros around burly forward Dutch Dennert, and the so-called "Original Celtics" became a huge attraction. After adding Nat Holman in 1921, they won the Eastern League title. The Boston version wouldn't come around until 1946 when Walter Brown co-opted the name for the Beantown NBA entry. New York fans, then, may take a certain pride that their hated rivals are just stepchildren of the "real" Celtics! For historians, the lure of this jersey goes deeper than regional pride, as it is one of the few such pieces of Original Celtics memorabilia extant, and as such one of the most important early 20th Century basketball artifacts we've seen. What's more, the jersey has held up remarkably well. The green wool material has a few holes and snags, as does the white V-neck trimming, but pretty much untouched is the "Originals" in scripted white letters sewn onto the chest, as well as the circular white patch with the green shamrock and "Celtics" above it on the back. While some of the underline slash of "Originals" has worn away, the lettering is intact; and the patch is nearly flawless. The button and buttonholes of the crotchpiece are undamaged as well and display the vintage tagging of Silberberg's Sports Wear, 381 Jackson Ave., Jersey City, New Jersey. All in all, EX. Worn by and from the estate of Francis Meehan with a photocopy of his original Celtics contract.
