1930s Big Leaguer Baseball Machine

1930s Big Leaguer Baseball Machine

Displayed is an intriguing, 1930s wooden baseball pinball machine. Manufactured by the Pacific Amusement MFG Co., the charming pinball machine is baseball themed, with scoring involving target holes labeled as single, double, triple, home run, sacrifice, stolen base, etc. The playing surface also has target holes with point values, i.e., 100, 200, 300, and so on. The machine has a coin slot for nickels (a fair price in the 1930s). The score for hits has been replaced with a handwritten list on paper that is on the lower left. Evidently, the pinball machine was located in a tavern, and the list of prizes for just a few runs scored appears to be humorously excessive. For example, a mere five run total is rewarded with "two hi balls." An eight-run aggregate earns a case of whiskey, a nine-run score equals a case of scotch, and ten runs earns the following, in sequential order: a house trailer, a 35' yacht, and a marble game. It must have been a popular game, with those prizes. The game is not operable, but it appears that it could be made so. It does not come with pinballs, a few small pins adjacent to some of the scoring holes are missing. There are a few stains and scratches on the game playing field and, on its wooden stand, as both the game and the stand exhibit nice use. The game itself is 25 inches wide and 47 inches long from leg to leg, and the height of the game area is sloped, measuring from approx. 8 to 13 inches. The game area rests on a stand with legs that add approx. 36 inches in height. The offering is a Great Depression item that will generate great interest in any collection, and its condition is such that a few repairs and additions could make it operable and generate lots of nickels and even a small profit, as long as the prizes are modified to exclude cases of scotch, house trailers, and 35-foot yachts.
