1930’s Lou Gehrig Tarzan Screen Test Photo

1930’s Lou Gehrig Tarzan Screen Test Photo

In the mid-1930’s, baseball great Lou Gehrig traveled to Hollywood after interest was expressed in a possible role in an upcoming Tarzan movie. The screen test reportedly went well, but Producer Sol Lesser decided against casting Gehrig after seeing his legs, quipping that they were “more functional than decorative”. Glenn Morris was ultimately selected for the title role in “Tarzan’s Revenge” (1937), which may have been a good thing for Gehrig, since the movie is thought by many to be the worst of the Tarzan series. This original screen test photo shows Gehrig clad in the famous leopard skin and wielding a club perhaps more appropriate to Fred Flintstone. Gehrig’s somewhat goofy smile is understandable and perfect for the occasion. Black & white, 9 1/2 x 7 1/4”. The photo comes from the estate of Christy Walsh, Sr., Lou Gehrig’s Business Manager from 1921 to 1941; a Letter of Authenticity, signed by Walsh’s daughter-in-law, is included.
