1930s Minit-Rub Baseball In-Store Advertising Display

1930s Minit-Rub Baseball In-Store Advertising Display

In days gone by, traveling salesmen used to sell tonics from the back of horse drawn wagons - tonics that were guaranteed to cure a plethora of ailments, from tendinitis to toothaches, from dizziness to depression. Some years later, the same miracle cures were being advertised in stores - on displays such as the presented offering: An eye-catching, colorful in-store 1930s advertising display - for "MINIT-RUB," which is touted on the poster as "greaseless-stainless-rubs in dry." This irregularly shaped, approx. 26x35" item is pure fun, and it will be a light-hearted, out-of-the-box addition to any collection. Underneath the large baseball image are six endorsers: managers - Hall of Fame skipper Bill Mckechnie/St. Louis Cards; George Gibson/Pittsburgh Pirates; Donie Bush/Cincinnati Reds, and three players: Captain Ben Wright/ Brooklyn Dodgers; Pepper Martin, Hall of Famer as a great second baseman for the Gashouse Gang/St. Louis Cards; George Watty/St. Louis Cards. On the opposite side of the poster is a headshot image of the Dodgers' star, Lefty O'Doul. O'Doul was a terrific hitter with a .349 lifetime batting average, but because he was also a pitcher, and he only played six full seasons as an outfielder, he never made the Hall of Fame, since voters felt that he lacked enough appearances as a batter. Maybe if Lefty had only used more "Minit-Rub." One can only wonder. The claims for "Minit-Rub" that are printed on the display are simply wonderful: "Quick relief from aches and pains/Headache relief 3 minutes by the clock/and the modern way to relieve sunburn, poison ivy, mosquito and insect bites." The large paper ad has been mounted on linen. It retains an excellent appearance. The offering will add cachet to any sports collection and create eye-catching interest in a charming, Depression-era vintage baseball display.
