1930s WPA Boxing Painting by A. Smith

1930s WPA Boxing Painting by A. Smith

This oil-on-board portrait in its original frame depicts a beleaguered fighter who has absorbed a punishment in the ring. There is a noticeable concentration on the lusty crowd, much in the style of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which was created in the 1930s by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to help provide economic relief to Americans suffering through the Great Depression. Many thousands of workers labored at their craft for little money but great pride through the WPA. There is a very slight fading of colors in the painting, which measures 27.75x36".
