1931 Babe Ruth w/Wife & Daughter Type I Photo (PSA)
Presented is a 1931 Type I Original News Service photo (5x6.75") of Babe Ruth, his second wife, Claire Hodgson Ruth (on the left), and Julia, the biological daughter of Claire (on the right), who was adopted by Ruth. The back of the Newspaper Enterprise Association photo reads, in part, "Fit as a fiddle, the mighty bambino of baseball, arrived at St. Petersburg, Florida, for his annual pre-season sessions on the golf links." Babe Ruth was 36 years old in 1931, but his baseball career was still going strong. He led the American League in home runs in 1931, belting 46. He also led the AL in RBIs (128), OBP (.495), Slugging (.700), and OPS (1.195). The gregarious Ruth was an enormous fan favorite, and larger than life. After all, he is the only baseball player to lead a league in both batting average and earned run average. He did that in separate years. and he has a lifetime pitching record of 94-46, with a career ERA of 2.28. The Babe did have one superstition. "The only superstition I had," said the Babe, "was to make sure to touch all the bases when I hit a home run." The Babe touched all the bases 714 times in the regular season, often homering more than the total home runs of other teams in the American league, at times the combined totals of more than one team. The photo comes with a PSA/DNA Letter of Authenticity certifying the photo as "TYPE I." The Type I photo remains a nice collection piece as it shows the Bambino, still near his peak, in a family scene.
