1931 Jimmy Foxx Game Model Bat
Displayed is a 1931 game model bat of "The Beast," Jimmie Foxx. Foxx had 30 homers and 120 RBI that season. Hall of Famer Foxx reached 500 home runs at 32 years old, the youngest Major Leaguer to reach the five-century mark. Foxx fit his intimidating nickname, with 195 pounds of chiseled muscle on a 6-foot frame. His lifetime total of 534 home runs was second only to that of Babe Ruth when Foxx retired. Jimmie played 20 years, with the Philadelphia Athletics (11 years), the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs, and the Philadelphia Phillies. He started his MLB career in 1925, and played through 1945, with the exception of 1943 when he was temporarily retired. Primarily a first baseman, he also played third base and catcher, played the outfield on occasion, had one game at shortstop, and in 1945 even pitched in nine games, with a 1.52 ERA that season. Lefty Gomez, a fellow Hall of Famer, faced Foxx on many occasions and Gomez described The Beast's physique in saying, "Even his hair had muscles." Foxx was a 3-time American League MVP, won a Triple Crown in 1932, took the AL Batting Championship twice, and was on two World Series winners. In the movie A League of Their Own, Tom Hanks plays the manager of a women's baseball team, Jimmy Dugan. The Dugan character is loosely modeled on Jimmie Foxx and Hank Wilson. Foxx actually did manage a women's baseball team, the Fort Wayne Daisies. The Hillerich and Bradsby Louisville Slugger bat is 33.75" long, and it weighs 38.4 ounces. The bat shows lots of use, with many ball marks, scuff marks, and nicks. It has a taped handle, with some loose tape. It has no markings on the knob. PSA says the bat is not a gamer. A "Jimmie Foxx" facsimile signature is etched into the barrel. A game model bat of "The Beast" adds power to any sports memorabilia assemblage.
