1931 New York Giants Sterling Silver Season Pass

1931 New York Giants Sterling Silver Season Pass

The New York Giants continued the team's annual charming series of sterling silver season passes with the offered item - a 1931 season pass entitled "FANNED OUT." The '31 Giants finished in second place in the National League with an 87-65-1 record. The team featured five future Hall of Famers: first baseman Bill Terry; shortstop Travis Jackson; outfielder Mel Ott; outfielder Fred Lindstrom, and left-handed pitcher Carl Hubbell, famous for his marvelous screwball. The team was managed by Hall of Famer John McGraw and two of McGraw's four coaches were Hall of Famers; Dave Bancroft and Charles "Chief" Bender. The pass measures approx. 1.1x1.6", and it weighs 5/8ths of an ounce. On the face of the pass are four fans, apparently ones whose team is being defeated. Left to Right, the first fan, stylishly wearing a "boater" straw hat, shows the anger in his face from what must be terrible play from a favorite team. While his ire is apparent, viewing the depiction is humorous. The fan in the middle exhibits sadness, yet his over-the-top angst is comical to us. The third figure on the season pass has his head buried in his hands, in despair over his team's play. The entire effect is light-hearted and makes one smile - it's gentle, vintage humor not something often seen in today's baseball marketing. Imprinted on the face of the pass is "Fanned Out," a clever triple entendre - meaning of "fans" as spectators, "fans," as in strikes out, and "fans," as if spreading out, as the depicted fans do when watching the game. Also imprinted on the face of the pass is "GIANTS 1931" and Chas. Stoneham Pres." The pass has a small eyelet on top from which a chain can be attached, but no chain is included. On the back is "Mary M. Ferguson" (the holder of the pass) and "752" (the pass number). Also on back is "Sterling" and "Lambert Bros." The pass is in NRMT condition, and its vintage humor makes it a fascinating collectible.
