1932 Boston Bruins Strategy Session (PSA Type I)
Presented is a 1932 vintage photo of a Boston Bruins' "strategy session." The photo depicts, left to right, Nels Stewart, coach Art Ross, and captain Dit Clapper. The photo combines three great Boston Bruins personages: Stewart was a center who was a very large player for his era, at 6'1" and 195 lbs. His skating seemed slow, but he was faster than he appeared. He was what in modern parlance might be called a "garbage collector." He had great strength, stick control, and shooting ability, and an uncanny knack for collecting rebounds in front of the net. He was a terrific finisher, and he was the first player to win multiple Hart Trophies as the NHL's leading scorer. After he retired in 1937, his goal total of 324 tallies was the greatest lifetime goal total from 1937-52, when his lifetime goal scoring record was broken by Maurice Richard. In this 1931-32 season, he scored 18 goals and added 18 assists for 36 points. Art Ross was a great defenseman who primarily played professional hockey in the time before the National Hockey League existed. He is in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player, but he made a name for himself as a coach, particularly with the Bruins. He was the first NHL coach to pull the goalie in favor of a sixth skater when trailing by a goal late in a game. The Ross Trophy, for the NHL's leading scorer, is named in honor of him. Hall of Famer Dit Clapper, a right wing and a defenseman, was the first player to play 20 or more years in the NHL and one of only nine players to do it for the same team. He scored 224 goals and had 246 assists for 474 points. The photo measures 6.5x8.5". Handwritten on the back of the photo is "Bruins' Strategy Powerhouse" and the names of Stewart, Ross, and Clapper. A stamp on the photo back reads, "Published NOV 28, 1932 Boston Herald." The photo has been encapsulated and PSA graded "AUTHENTIC." The photo provides great nostalgia as a example of some of the Hall of Fame personages of "old time hockey."
