1932 Portsmouth Spartans Team Postcard (Pre-Detroit Lions)
Prior to their first year as the Detroit Lions in 1934, the franchise was located in Portsmouth, Ohio for its initial four years in the National Football League. This scarce photo postcard consists of a team photo from the 1932 Spartans team, which tied for first place with a 6-1-4 record before losing a tie-breaker game at Chicago Stadium, falling to the Red Grange-Bronko Nagurski Bears, 9-0. The card is in EX condition with a crisp clear image, as well as the team and year displayed across the top in gold with the player names below the photo, also in gold, Most notable among the roster is Dutch Clark, a college and pro football Hall of Famer. The back of the card is unused with the following handwritten in ink: "FRANK ZUBIK PORTSMOUTH BALL CLUB JUNE 18, 1935." That championship game was a precursor to divisional play and an annual playoff game to decide the NFL Championship in future years. A rare piece of history!
