1933-1934 R308 Tatoo Orbit Advertisement
Displayed is a striking advertising display card for the R308 "Surprise Photograph" cards issued in 1934 by Tattoo Chewing Gum, a brand produced by the Orbit Gum Company, a Wrigley Gum subsidiary. The thin card stock display measures 8.75x6", and the bright yellow, green, and red colors are eye-popping. The advertisement touted Surprise Photographs of movie stars, famous persons, and baseball players. At least 51 baseball players have appeared with this set, according to the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. Some of the cards include Hall of Famers: Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Joe Cronin, Charlie Gehringer, Connie Mack (HOF as a manager), and Dizzy Dean. The blank white cards were not included in the one cent package of gum that was purchased. Rather, the blank white cards were displayed near the display advertisement and the small packages of gum, and when the gum was purchased the store proprietor handed a blank card to the customer. The unique quality of these self-developing cards was in the 'magic" process of producing these photos. As described on the front of the advertising display, at first, someone would only see a plain, white card. One would take off the blotting paper from the back of the card, dip the blotting paper in water and rub the blank card with the blotting paper. Then, "Magically" the black and white image on the card would appear. The offered display card was meant to be placed with or alongside the gum and white cards. This display advertisement is in excellent condition, and the 82-year-old display still exhibits colors that seem as vivid as when they were printed.
