1933 Mel Ott Original News Service Photo (PSA Type I)

1933 Mel Ott Original News Service Photo (PSA Type I)

Presented is a 1933 Mel Ott Type I Original News Service Photo. Ott was only 17 years old when he first played for the New York Giants in 1926, but the Hall of Famer was at the Polo Grounds to stay, as he spent his entire playing career (1926-47) with the Giants. Ott was a fixture in right field and became the first National League to ever reach 500 home runs, finishing his career with 511 round-trippers. In fact, when Ott retired as a player, his home run total of 511 was 200 home runs higher than the lifetime total of any other National League player in history. The 12-time All-Star batted a career .304, and he led the NL in homers six times. He led the Giants in home runs for 18 consecutive years, still the Major League record for a player leading his club in homers in consecutive years. He was a key member of the Giants' 1933 World Champions. Ott also managed the Giants for seven seasons, from 1942-48, all but '48 as a playing manager. The 5'9", 170 lb. left-handed swinging slugger generated power by lifting his right leg into the air before he swung. His manager when he first came to the Giants was the great John McGraw, and the strong-willed McGraw refused to let Ott get more seasoning in the minor leagues. McGraw explained his rationale in saying, "I don't want anyone to tinker with that natural swing." The offered photo shows Ott in a follow through after a swing. The photo has some tiny creasing in the upper right corner and in the lower left margin, and the photo exhibits some minor fading because of the passage of time. The Type I photo has been encapsulated and PSA certified "Type I AUTHENTIC."
