1935 James J. Braddock World Championship Gloves from the Max Baer Fight
They are no glass slippers but they belonged to "The Cinderella Man." These boxing gloves were worn on June 13, 1935 by James J. Braddock when he took the World’s Heavyweight Championship title from Max Baer in the biggest upset of that era. These storied Henlee gloves (EX) originally came from longtime boxing man Mike McGowan who worked for promoter extraordinaire Mike Jacobs. Our consignor (comes with his LOA) was given the gloves in 1946 by McGowan who worked in Braddock’s corner. They are vintage inked on the inside (although the dates are incorrect), “Baer- Braddock July 3, 1935” and simply “Braddock.” It is not unusual for pieces such as this to be misdated (this was three weeks after the fight) and it could be referring to when he obtained them or when he wrote the date. Lot also come with an interesting photographic display showing the Louis-Farr ring of 17 champions with Jack Johnson, Braddock, Leonard, Ambers, Ross, Starkey, Walker, Tunney, Dempsey, Baer, Schmeling, Dundee and more. It is backed with easel and measures 10.5x13” in cardboard (VG-EX).
