1935 San Francisco Seals and Tokyo Giants Baseballs

1935 San Francisco Seals and Tokyo Giants Baseballs

After the ultra-successful 1934 Major League Baseball Tour of Japan, Matsutaro Shoriki, owner of the newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, established Japan’s first professional baseball team, the Dai Nippon Tokyo Yakyu Kurabu aka The Great Japan Tokyo Baseball Club. The following year, with the help of Lefty O’Doul, the Japanese club embarked on a successful tour of the United States during which they won 93 games against semi-pro squads and teams from the Pacific Coast League, most famously against the San Francisco Seals. It was during this tour that the Dai Nippon Tokyo Yakyu Kurabu were renamed the Tokyo Giants, and the Far East version of the New York Yankees was born. Offered are an incredible pair of baseballs from this historic moment, the first is a baseball signed by 27 members of the 1935 San Francisco Seals including Joe DiMaggio and Lefty O’Doul, the second is a baseball signed by at least a dozen 1935 Tokyo Giants including Victor Starffin. Starffin, only 18 at the time, was a 6’4” white Russian hurler who became one of the greatest pitchers in Japanese baseball history, becoming the first to accumulate 300 wins. His autographs are notoriously rare, due to his early demise in the 1950s. The baseballs are in overall Good condition, with signatures averaging “4”. Accompanied by the original presentation box and a newspaper article about the Tour.
