1936 Larry Kelley All-American Football Presentational Blanket
The strange saga of Larry Kelley is recalled by this immensely rare, eye-catching All America blanket he was given in 1936, when the great Yale receiver also won the 2nd ever Heisman Trophy. Perhaps the Bulldogs' greatest athlete of all time, he was senior captain of the Bulldog football and baseball teams (and also of the basketball team, which he declined) and scored 15 TDs in his college career while also playing on defense, including the 49-yard TD in '34 that ended Princeton's 15-game winning streak. One of just 3 Ivy Leaguers to win the Heisman, Kelley seemed unfazed by it all. When told he'd won the Heisman, he said, "I didn't even know there was such a thing." Drafted by the NFL Lions and baseball's Cardinals -- as well as being offered a movie role, to play himself -- he instead went into teaching. Elected to the College Hall of Fame in 1969, he sold the Heisman in '99 to raise money for his neices and nephews, then, shockingly, a year later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 85. The 56 x 69" crimson red wool blanket has the historically important red, white and blue crest (13" in diameter) of the "All America Board of Football" at the center around a football and stars-and-stripes motif, "Kelley" and "Yale" above and below, "1936" at the upper left corner in white, a yellow star at the lower left. Blue and white border pattern. Wording on a tag along the left side has been rubbed off. Overall EX+ with no pilling or tearing, still vivid colors (a tad of yellowing on the white areas) and wool that feathery soft to the touch. Great blanket with a great story of a sports antihero.
