1936 Wire Photo Of Lou Gehrig Batting

1936 Wire Photo Of Lou Gehrig Batting

Hard to find a better shot of Larrupin’ Lou taking a cut than this International News wire service snap dated Sept. 1, 1936. 6.5 x 8.5” photo shows Gehrig’s sinewy frame working with perfect precision as he follows through, his neck muscles night and his eyes squinting at yet another sizzling line drive off his bat. Yankee Stadium grandstand is fairly empty, suggesting it was taken in BP, though a catcher’s mitt is off to the left. Photo has been touched up by visible outlines drawn to accentuate his pant legs. Attached caption headlined “Big Bertha in Action” and notes that Gehrig “has that big stick primed for the World Series,” and advises “Editors...Sent for your use now and during World Series.” International stamping and editorial notations on back. Photo VG with surface scratching and a few pinholes along the right border.
