1937-1939 Bob Feller Rookie Era Photograph Collection (6)
Bob "Rapid Robert" Feller was an amazing baseball prodigy. The Hall of Fame right-hander was so advanced as a high school age pitcher that he skipped the minor leagues and went straight to the Major Leagues with the Cleveland Indians at age 17 in 1936. Offered are six approx. 7x9" black and white Feller photos from his rookie and early seasons. After a relief appearance on July 19, 1936, Feller made his first start on Aug. 23, 1936, and struck out 15 batters. Feller had a fantastic career start and then entered the United States Navy, where he served from 1942-45, serving as a petty officer and a gun captain in combat on the USS Alabama. Despite missing four years of his pitching prime while in the military, Feller had a lifetime 266-162 record with 44 shutouts and a career ERA of 3.25. He threw three no-hitters, was an 8-time All-Star, a 6-time AL win leader, and a 7-time MLB strikeout leader. The photos: 1) In a late April 1937 photo, Feller poses as if on the mound. The photo shows a few small paint spots. 2) Feller on the mound in an early May 1937 game in New York. 3) Feller, a star pitcher with the Indians, sits quietly in a Cleveland airport restaurant on May 10, 1937, before flying back to Iowa for his high school graduation. 4) In this photo dated May 4, 1938, Feller poses in the dugout with his Cleveland manager, Oscar Vitt. 5) In this Oct. 7, 1938, photo, Feller is arriving in Seattle for a post-season barnstorming game. 6) In this May 15, 1939, photo, Feller and his father and his sister are at the hospital bedside of his mother, who was hit by a foul ball in a game Feller was pitching. She suffered a forehead wound that required seven stitches. The top left corner has a fold, and there is a large crease in the right corner. Each of the photos exhibits some unevenness because of creasing and few small folds. Despite the aforementioned imperfections, the photos provide a fascinating look into the earliest years of the Feller phenomenon.
