1937 "Chicago" Baseball Painting by Howard Mueller

1937 "Chicago" Baseball Painting by Howard Mueller

Oil on canvas painting by noted illustrator Howard Mueller. The artwork pictures an age-old baseball scene as three players plead a call with an umpire who is stands resolute in his decision. The scoreboard is partially visible in the background, as is a pennant that appears to read "Chicago." Signed and dated ("1937") by the artist on the reverse canvas. Mueller's name and the year ("1937") are also written on the reverse of the wood frame. Mueller was known for his illustrations and was a frequent contributor to Playboy and Ian Fleming's James Bond series. This is an early work and was most likely commissioned as a magazine or book illustration. The painting (22" x 28") displays minor paint loss along the bottom border, a tiny pin hole near the top, and a tiny tear near the upper left border. Framed to total dimensions of 24" x 29.5".
