1937 Ciudad Trujillo Last Game Program

1937 Ciudad Trujillo Last Game Program

This Dominican League championship game program is an incredibly rare historical footprint of dictator Rafael Trujillo's attempt to use baseball as a political tool. In 1937 Trujillo lured top Negro league players -- Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell -- to play on his team in the Dominican League, La Ciudad Trujillo Dragons, fully expecting to win and increase his popularity. In the championship game in Campeonata Nacional Estadium, the Dragons played Aguilas Cibaenas as Trujillo's army ringed the field, bayonets drawn. Petrified, they won 8-6 and ran for the docks to catch a boat home. As a bonus, the scorecard is filled out, confirming that all three black superstars indeed played in that climactic game. 4 x 10" with some incidental browning, o/w EX.
