1938 Babe Ruth & Tony Lazzeri Acme Photo (PSA Type I)
Displayed is the great New York Yankee Sultan of Swat, the immortal Babe Ruth, in an very unusual Type I photo as the Yankee slugger made his debut as a Brooklyn Dodger first base coach on June 19th, 1938. Ruth is together again with Tony Lazzeri, his Yankee teammate for nine seasons. Ruth played with the Yankees from 1920-1934, and HOF second baseman Tony Lazzeri was on the Yankees from 1926-1937. Ruth had been retired from baseball since June in the 1935 season, when he was with the National League's Boston Braves. Ruth was desirous of being a Major League manager, and that is the main reason he came out of retirement. The Dodgers intended to promote shortstop Leo Durocher, not a friend of Ruth, to the manager's job for the 1939 season, but Ruth didn't know this at the time. The Dodgers were interested in making money from Ruth, as many fans came out to Ebbets Field to see him blast baseballs over the right field fence and onto Bedford Ave. during batting practice. The Dodgers also scheduled in-season exhibition games against minor league teams that year, and Ruth even played in the games, drawing great crowds. Lazzeri was on the Chicago Cubs in 1938, and he hit .267 in 54 games, The 6.5x8.5" photo is an original News Service Photo for Acme Newspapers. It was taken at Ebbets Field. In part, the back of the photo reads, "Is he happy? Just look at this." The photo has a tiny partial tear along the right border, but overall, the photo is in very good condition. Stamped on the back of the photo is ACME NEWS PICTURES/220 E. 42nd Street/New York City." The photo comes with a PSA photograph certification. Ruth seems to be filled with cheer on his return to baseball, and the Type I photo conveys his joy. The photo of Babe Ruth in a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform is sure to inspire interest in any collection.
