1938 Davis Cup Winning "Last Point" Trophy Ball & Incredible Collection of Tennis Ephemera - from Estate of Line Judge Ellwood M. Powell
Australia captured the 33rd International Lawn Tennis Challenge - now known as the Davis Cup - defeating Japan in the final to earn the honor. The actual ball used on the final point is the highlight of this captivating collection of historic tennis treasures. The Wright and Ditson ball includes the following handwritten message: "DAVIS CUP 1938 QUIST VS. BUDGE GERMANTOWN CRICKET CLUB - THIS BALL WON CUP HIT OUT BY (Adrian) QUIST FOR LAST POINT TO ME ON LINE." The ball and other items included in the lot come from Philadelphia-based line judge Ellwood Powell. Also included are: official's ribbon for the 1947 Pro Indoor Championship, typed correspondence from tennis officials, old bracket sheets (earliest - 1931), Middle States Lawn Tennis Association handbook, 1952 rule book, 1930 and 1934 American Lawn Tennis magazines, 1938 and 1939 Davis Cup media guides, 1967, 1957 and 1958 Pennsylvania Lawn Tennis Championships programs and other various media credentials and programs.
