1938 Experimental National League Night Game Baseball
Don't be fooled by what appears to be significant toning on the Official National League (Frick) ball, circa 1938. The ball itself was actually tinted yellow as part of an experiment to provide better visibility for night games, while still in the infancy of night baseball. The ball shows game use and is in VG-EX condition, which is amazing considering the scarcity of these balls to begin with. While the experiment was short-lived as they appeared to make little, if any, difference, one historical footnote is that this type of ball was utilized for the first night game at Ebbets Field, in which Johnny Vander Meer pitched a no-hitter for Cincinnati against Brooklyn, his second consecutive no-no in a four-day span.
