1938 Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling Original Film Fight Poster
Original poster promoting a film viewing of the 1938 Heavyweight title bout between champion Joe Louis and Max Schmeling at the "Ritz" on "Fri-Sat Jun 24 25." The colorful poster features portrait images of each fighter, while the text at the base reads "Blow by Blow - - Taken At Ringside." Printed by the "Globe Poster Corp." of Baltimore, as noted in print in the lower right corner. The historic second fight between Louis and Schmeling took place at Yankee Stadium on June 22, 1938. Although over 70 million people listened to the fight on radio, in an era without television, it was common practice for theaters to show films of championship bouts shortly afterwards. As we can see here, this filming was shown just two days after Louis knocked out Schmeling to retain the title, and avenge his only loss up to that time. The poster (22x28"), which has been dry mounted upon a cardboard backing of equal dimensions, displays moderate-to-heavy creasing, edge tears, and light staining. The size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
