1939 Hall of Fame Signed Baseball
This signed ball from the dedication of the National Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame, held in Cooperstown on June 12, 1939 to mark the game's centennial, may fairly be called the Hope Diamond of collectible horsehides. The profoundly important ball wears the dignity of the occasion as well as approx. 18 attendees that include 2 distinguished men from the 1st Hall of Fame class of 1936 -- Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner -- and some of the all-timers who followed: Connie Mack, Napoleon Lajoie (signed as "Larry Lajoie") and Cy Young (HOF '38), George Sisler (HOF '39), as well as future HOFers Charlie Gehringer, Arky Vaughan, Bill Terry (signed as "William Terry") and Bill McKechnie. The best and most eye-grabbing are Ruth, Wagner and Lajoie, all vibrant 8/10s. Others are lighter and a few are somewhat unreadable, thus there are hidden treasures on the ball that still may be determined. As for the Spalding itself, it is stamped "Hall of Fame" and bears a handwritten date of "6-12-39", when the baseball world gathered in Cooperstown for the festivities. Its condition is EX with an even toning and a few areas darkened by time. There are also 2 small inoffensive stains to the right of the HOF stamp, not affecting any of the signatures. The regal nature of this ball is undeniable.
