1939 Lou Gehrig Monument Prototype
The actual prototype for the Lou Gehrig Plaque that sits in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. This is one of the three original monuments that stand in center field at Yankee Stadium. Before they poured the bronze monument, they cast this plaster version in 1939 to make sure it was right. [It is exactly the same image as the piece that stands in the cathedral in the Bronx.] Discovered in the catacombs of Yankee Stadium in the early 1970's by legendary sportswriter Bert Sugar who marketed these artifacts, including the thousands of stadium seats. It was sold to Barry Halper and was obtained through the auction of The Barry Halper Collection at Sotheby’s. The plaque itself is 12.5x10”. It is wondrously dimensional with the Iron Horse staring out for all eternity. In its original stadium wood frame (19x16”) on red cloth matte with “Yankee Stadium 1923-1973” plaque in brass. Original patina, some pro restoration to Lou’s face, which is virtually undetectable. Magnificent piece of pantheon importance--the only other comparable is the “extra” Mickey Mantle Day plaque, which auctioned at Leland’s for $33,000.
