1939 New York Yankees Team Signed Baseball with Gehrig
No better surviving piece of memorabilia exists from the Yankees’ historic and emotionally charged 1939 season than this incredible ball signed by 23 team members -- with the emotional centerpiece the immortal marker of Lou Gehrig smack on the sweet spot he had earned in a career, and life, that suddenly were interrupted by the diagnosis of a terminal illness early in the season. And this quality of excellence and continuity is also written on the ball, literally, in the signature on a side panel of Lou’s successor as team leader -- Joe DiMaggio, who had already reached a level of greatness such that the ball is stamped “Official Joe DiMaggio League Ball,” for Joe D’s amateur league, and willingly signed by his Yankee mates on that superb roster. Names include fellow HOFers Bill Dickey, Red Rolfe, Lefty Gomez, Red (as “Chas.”) Ruffing, Johnny Murphy, Frank Crosetti, Tom Henrich, Myril Hoag, Spud Chandler, Babe Dahlgren, Jake Powell, George Selkirk, Monte Pearson, Bill Knickerbocker, Bump Hadley, Steve Sundra, etc. Signatures are on the light side but eminently readable, averaging good 6’s and 7’s. Ball itself is toned to a delightful and classy light golden brown, and grades VG-EX status with a few brown specks including one just above -- but fortunately not encroaching on -- the very valuable Gehrig signature. Even comes in the original MacGregor box.
