1939 Ted Williams Tim Murnane Trophy (Rookie Season)

1939 Ted Williams Tim Murnane Trophy (Rookie Season)

Amazing 1939 Tim Murnane Trophy presented to the legendary Ted Williams. The "trophy" is actually a plaque with a silver plate mounted on a wood base, with the piece weighing a hefty 8lb 10oz, and measuring 12" across, and 21" top to bottom at the widest point. Great etched image of Williams is on the plate, which reads, "Tim Murnane Trophy - Theodore Francis Williams - American League - Runs Batted-In Champion - and - Boston's Outstanding Major League Performer - 1939 - Presented by Boston Chapter Baseball Writers Association of America." The plate has some scratching and tarnish but should clean nicely. There's a heavy chain on back for hanging and a few minor scratches to the wood base as well. Note that this is from his rookie 1939 campaign in which he blasted onto the scene with 31 homers and a league-leading 175 RBI; also worth noting that the Rookie of the Year award was not instituted until 1947, and Ted still holds the record for most RBI in a rookie season. Tim Murnane played in the Majors in the late 1800s but became better known for spending over three decades as the leading sportswriter at the Boston Globe.
