1940 Play Ball Baseball Card "Hobo Art"
This is unlike anything we have offered before. This is created from Bob Johnson's 1940 Play Ball baseball card. In soft wood, the detail is marvelous and a spectacular piece of American folk art. Identified on verso as "Attributed to anonymous hobo carver from trains stopping in Cleona, Lebanon County, PA. As a young boy in 1940 previous owner Dick Batz and other local kids would take their favorite baseball cards and for the price of a few cents, purchase a carved likeness such as this. It has been in storage for over 40 years, pencil dated on back." Cardboard insert and wire hanger were added later. Measures 7" x 11.5", and is the only one of its kind known to have survived.
