1940s Augie Galan Brooklyn Dodgers Game Worn Jacket
Displayed is a 1940s Augie Galan Brooklyn Dodgers game worn dugout jacket. Galan was an outfielder from Berkeley, California, who played 16 seasons in the Major Leagues. He played with the Chicago Cubs (1934-41) before playing for Brooklyn (1941-46). At the end of his career, he was with the Cincinnati Reds (1947-48), New York Giants (1947), and Philadelphia Athletics (1947). Until late in the 1943 season, he was a switch-hitter, but then a knee injury forced him to bat only left-handed for the remainder of his career. When Galan was 11 years old, he broke his right elbow (on his throwing arm) in a sandlot baseball game in Berkeley. Fearful that the injury would cause his parents to make him stop playing baseball, Galan hid the broken elbow from his mother and father, and the injury never properly healed, bothering him for the rest of his life. Galan hit .287 over his MLB career, with 100 home runs and 1,706 hits. He was a 3-time All-Star, a 2-time NL stolen base leader, and was on pennant winners with the '35 and '38 Cubs, and with the '41 Dodgers. The displayed jacket is one that would be worn before games and in between innings in the dugout. It has a thick lining, so it would keep Galan warm, especially on very cold days and nights that were early and late in the season. The blue Nylon jacket has white trim. A working zipper runs down the front. Embroidered in white threads under the front left tail, near the zipper, is Galan's number 24. In the neck is a Wilson manufacturer's tag and a size 42 tag. The offering is accompanied by a framed photo of Augie (6x8", framed to 9x11") with "Gate House" handwritten on back, and a Gate House Framemakers sticker also on back. The jacket shows excellent use. Considering its age of approximately 80 years, the jacket is in excellent condition, and it would make a wonderful Brooklyn Dodgers display piece.
