1941 First Set of Football Penalty Flags
On October 17, 1941, officials used signal flags for the very first time to control the action on the gridiron. The flags were designed by then-Youngstown coach Dwight "Dike" Beede, who felt that whistles alone were insufficient for those on the sidelines. Offered here are the two red flags used that day, which seem to be fashioned out of silk, lead and tape. Also here are the other accoutrements of the officials from that day, including five whistles and two archaic down markers. LOA.
