1941 Joe Louis Edward J. Neil Memorial Award
Joe Louis, the legendary "Brown Bomber" will forever be remembered as one of the greatest fighters in boxing history as well as one of its finest representatives. Louis still holds the record for longevity as heavyweight champion with a reign that spanned eleven years. His power and ferocity in the ring were offset by a quiet and respectful demeanor outside it. Louis is remembered for his contributions to the war effort including purse donations, numerous exhibition bouts for the troops and lending his words and image to promotional literature used by the army to boost morale. In the ring Louis is nearly unmatched for his accomplishments. He defeated some of the biggest names in the sport including: Max Schmeling, Primo Cranera, Jack Sharkey, Jimmy Braddock, Billy Conn and Jersey Joe Walcott. Offered here is the prestigious Edward J. Neil Award given to Joe Louis for his service to boxing in 1941 by the Boxing Writers' Association. In 1941 Joe Louis successfully defended his heavyweight tile an incredible seven times. His victories included Gus Dorazio, Lou Nova, Buddy Baer, Abe Simon and Red Burman. His biggest test was on June 18, 1941 at the Polo Grounds in New York when he was matched against the adept boxer, World Light Heavyweight Champion Billy Conn. Conn was ahead on points going into the unlucky 13th round. He tried to mix it up with Louis to his demise. Louis hit him with two strong right hands to the chin and ended the fight. For his accomplishments Louis was remembered by the Boxing Writers' Association who bestowed this award on him. The award has the image of Edward J. Neil on the top of the metal plaque which is mounted on a wood base. The plaque reads, "THE EDWARD J. NEIL MEMORIAL FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO BOXING IN 1941 PRESENTED BY BOXING WRITERS' ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK TO JOE LOUIS. There are some scratches to the wood base. The screws holding the metal portion to the wood base have been replaced. Otherwise the award is in fine condition and unrestored. Other than his championship belt this is by far the most significant award given to Joe Louis.
