1941 John Wayne "Old Oklahoma" Original Photograph (PSA Type I)

1941 John Wayne "Old Oklahoma" Original Photograph (PSA Type I)

Presented is a Type I original photograph of John Wayne, made to promote Old Oklahoma, a 1943 Republic Pictures western starring Wayne. The photo has become a definitive photo of the Hollywood Star. Wayne played football for Glendale High School in California, and he was given a football scholarship to USC. He was a tackle, and he played freshman football and was on the varsity as a sophomore. He was known as Marion Morrison then, his birth name. He is reputed to have either dislocated or broken his shoulder in a surfing mishap before his junior year at USC, and he eventually lost his scholarship and dropped out of college. He was already doing some work in at Fox Studios as a "prop boy," and extra, even appearing as a USA player in the 1927 film The Drop Kick. Eventually, such movie directors as Raoul Walsh and John Ford discovered Wayne, and he started getting acting work in many films, eventually becoming a star. Once Wayne began getting acting roles more substantial than work as an extra, the studio executives changed his professional name to John Wayne. It is estimated that he had a lead role in over 140 movies, winning the Oscar as Best Actor in the 1969 film True Grit. In Old Oklahoma, reissued in 1947 as War of the Wildcats, Wayne co-stars with Martha Scott. George "Gabby" Hayes and Dale Evans also have prominent roles. The offered black & white photo measures 8x10". It's a majestic, iconic shot, depicting Wayne on a horse, gazing towards the horizon. The Type I photo has been encapsulated and PSA graded AUTHENTIC.
