1942 Washington Redskins NFL Championship Fob Presented to Arch McDonald
Rare 1942 Washington Redskins World Championship fob issued to well-known Washington sports announcer Arch McDonald. This is just the second example of this attractive fob we have ever handled and we cannot recall the last time another has appeared at auction. The gold-colored fob, designed in the shape of a football, features the team's "Indian Chief" logo in relief on a side panel, with the headdress accented in red enamel. The year, 1942, appears on the same panel. Lettered on the other three panels, respectively, in descending order, are "World's Champion Redskins," the score "Redskins 14 Bears 6," and the name of the recipient, "Arch McDonald." Arch McDonald was the longtime radio announcer for the Washington Senators and he took on the added duties of Washington Redskins play-by-play announcer during the 1940s. He remained the voice of the Redskins until the time of his death in 1960. 1942 marked the Redskins second NFL Championship and their victory over the Bears avenged a humiliating 73-0 loss to Chicago in the 1940 title game. All NFL Championship presentational pieces from this time period are scarce and highly prized by collectors, especially those given to significant team employees, such as McDonald. The fob, which measures one-inch in length, remains in Excellent to Mint condition.
