1943 Jack Johnson Signed Letter
Jack Johnson was the first African-American to win the coveted World Heavyweight Title. He did so in 1908 in Australia defeating then champion Tommy Burns after hounding him around the globe. Johnson became the target of hatred for many in the white community. There was a constant call for a "Great White Hope" to defeat him, but Johnson defeated all comers including Stanley Ketchel, Frank Moran, Jim Jeffries, and Jim Flynn. He held the title for nearly seven years before losing it to Jess Willard in 1915. Offered here is a one page typed letter on Jack Johnson stationary dated October 26, 1943. Johnson has boldly signed this in ink. A pencil notation regarding Johnson’s death in 1946 has been added below Johnson’s signature. The letter is 7 ¼” x 10 ½”. It has moderate toning and has both horizontal and vertical folds. Adhesive residue on the reverse and at the lower corner. Overall very good condition with a very bold signature.
