1943 St. Louis Cardinals Sportsman's Park World Series Game Used Baseball

Presented is an unusual find: An official National League (Frick) baseball signed by the entire umpiring crew of the 1943 World Series. In this war time Series, the New York Yankees defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by 4 games to 1. The Yankee team featured the following Hall of Famers: Joe McCarthy (manager), Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio (in military), Joe Gordon, Phil Rizzuto (in military), and Red Ruffing (in military). The St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famers: Billy Southworth (manager), Enos Slaughter (in military) and Stan Musial. That year's World Series umpires, all of whom signed: Eddie Rommel (former star pitcher), Beans Reardon, Joe Rue, and Bill Stewart (also a hockey referee and in the Hockey Hall of Fame). Also signing the ball were two other umpires - most likely the reserve umpires for the Series: Jocko Conlan (a National League umpire, briefly a player for the Chicago White Sox, who later was inducted into the Hall of Fame as an umpire) and pitcher and then American League Umpire George Pipgras. The ball shows use. It was from either Game 4 or Game 5, on Oct. 10 and 11, at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.
