1944 WWII Raleigh Cigarettes Carton w/Original Store Advertising Decal

1944 WWII Raleigh Cigarettes Carton w/Original Store Advertising Decal

Displayed is a 1944 World War II era carton of Raleigh Plain End Cigarettes as an original store advertising decal promoting Raleigh Cigarettes. Raleigh Cigarettes were manufactured by the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. Louisville, Kentucky. These cigarettes were not specifically designed for the military, but Brown & Williamson also produced enormous quantities of cigarettes under its contracts with the war time military, so it is plausible that these cigarettes or ones just like them, were originally intended for use by the Armed Services. The brown box is 3 x 11" and has a depth of 2". The lid of the box reads, "Raleigh Plain End Cigarettes" and lower on the lid is, "Plain Ends/ Union Made." The carton contains 10 packs of cigarettes, with twenty cigarettes in each pack. Each cigarette pack measures 2.25 x 3 x 1". Each pack has a colorful image of the famous Sir Walter Raleigh on both the front and the back of the pack. The carton has been opened, but all ten of the packs in the carton are unopened and have the original tax stamp on the top. The left end of the carton has water damage, with water staining and some small tears and some paper loss. The right end of the carton also shows water damage, but it is less extensive. There are also other instances of water damage in a few places, but the individual cigarette packs were spared water damage. The accompanying card stock display advertisement measures approx. 5 x 8.25". It also contains a colorful image of Sir Walter Raleigh. On the back of the display ad are the instructions for display. The instructions seem to have sun damage, with resulting darkening. Even 78 years after their production, one can easily smell the cigarettes inside each unopened pack. The packs are so fresh, by their feel, sight and smell, that this unusual offering transports one back in time to America in World War II.
