1945 Mel Ott Game Worn New York Giants Flannel Jersey From His 500 Homerun Year

1945 Mel Ott Game Worn New York Giants Flannel Jersey From His 500 Homerun Year

There are game worn jerseys and the there are SPECIAL game worn jerseys. There's no doubt this offering falls into the latter category for there are few pieces that have ever come up for auction that are more desirable, or that will ever be more highly sought after than this extraordinary specimen. Presented is Mel Ott's 1945 New York Giants home flannel, from the season he became the third member of The 500 Homerun Club (only Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx arrived there earlier). Blue on red "GIANTS" across front, his number "4" on reverse, and "Ott" chain-stitched in red in the collar. Just below is the manufacturer's "Gold Smith" label with a [size] "42" flag tag to the right. Set and year in the tail, "3...45", as well. Zippered-front flannel sports fantastic patriotic colors, worn by the Jints only in the war years. Its condition is fabulous, with only a few small moth holes on the backside, which does not hinder its amazing eye-appeal. Everything is absolutely original on this Ott jersey. Consigned by the son of the only other gent to don this prized uniform for a very short time as a minor leaguer in 1946, this jersey hasn't seen the light of day in sixty years. A select number of folks have seen, touched, or even owned a 500HR flannel. Not many have had the fortune to handle a Mel Ott shirt. Sure, the Hall of Fame has one, but theirs isn't for sale. As previously mentioned, as the third member of this exclusive club, Ott's steady climb to the magical Number Five Hundred culminated on August 1, 1945, when he connected off Johnny Hutchings of the Braves at the Polo Grounds wearing a home jersey like this one. In fact, this may be it, but we can not say for sure. The FIRST National Leaguer to 500 taters, Ott's total wasn't surpassed until 1966 when Willie Mays got #512. Definitely one of the top five flannel jerseys Leland's has handled. If you are the one lucky enough to win this artifact, it will certainly fit in as the cornerstone of the finest baseball memorabilia collection. Will include Letter of Provenance from Bruce Erickson, whose dad was savvy enough to stash this beauty away for posterity.
