1945 Mel Ott New York Giants Game Worn Jersey (MEARS 8.5) - 50/50 Chance It Is His 500 Home Run Jersey

1945 Mel Ott New York Giants Game Worn Jersey (MEARS 8.5) - 50/50 Chance It Is His 500 Home Run Jersey

Of the three all original Mel Ott player jerseys that are known to exist, only one is graded higher than this gem. The other two are in private collections and likely will remain buried for many years to come, so if you are putting together 500 home run club jerseys, this may be your only chance for an all original Ott. Adding to this one, he hit his 500th homer in 1945 in a home uniform like this one, so there is a good chance that he wore this to record that historic shot. We can't find any photos from the game so we can't state one way or another that this is the jersey that he wore for that game, only that it is possible. This home jersey is all original with "GIANTS" in blue on red felt on the front and "4" in the same blue on red felt on the back. "Ott" is sewn on a swatch in the collar along with Goldsmith and size 42 tagging, set "3" and year "45" chain stitched on the front tail. The only deductions keeping this from a perfect 10 are a missing zipper clasp (which could be replaced if the new owner so desired) and a missing stars and bars patch from the right sleeve, which could also be replaced with a vintage original patch. With these two minor additions, it is possible that the grade could be bumped up. This is one of the finest and scarcest baseball jerseys on the planet. It shows nice use and if new information comes forward in the form of photos from the game that prove this is the #500 jersey, the value climbs into the seven-figure stratosphere. Either way, you have a museum piece in the form of one of the true gems of uniform collecting.
