1946-48 Joe DiMaggio New York Yankees Signed Professional Model Bat (PSA)

1946-48 Joe DiMaggio New York Yankees Signed Professional Model Bat (PSA)

Joe DiMaggio H&B pro-model ("D29") bat, dating from the 1946-1948 manufacturing period, beautifully inscribed by DiMaggio on the barrel. Accompanied by full LOAs from PSA for both the bat and the signature. As noted in the PSA bat letter, this piece has the unique provenance of once residing in the famed Barry Halper Collection (it appeared as Lot 1457 in the 1999 Sotheby's sale of Halper's collection). Halper and DiMaggio were very close friends and DiMaggio was a frequent guest at Halper's home, where much of his collection was housed. During those visits, Halper would normally ask DiMaggio to sign several pieces and "The Clipper" was always happy to oblige. When signing for Halper, DiMaggio often liked to add a little something relating to the item and this bat was no exception. DiMaggio has inscribed the bat in black fine-point marker (grading 9/10) just below the barrel stamping: "Bat used in my early years/1936/Joe DiMaggio." Unfortunately, DiMaggio was mistaken with regard to the age of the bat, because, as noted earlier, the bat was produced between the years 1946 and 1948. Also, according to PSA, although it is a DiMaggio pro-model bat, the specifications do not match any of those ordered by DiMaggio during that three-year span. Therefore, PSA has deemed it to be a pro-model/index bat from the period, with none of its use attributed to DiMaggio. The bat, which measures 35 inches in length and weighs 34.7 ounces, displays substantial use throughout, including ball marks and few nicks on the front barrel. The top end of the barrel was replaced and a subsequent owner has improved the original repair. It should be noted the repair is now barely noticeable and in no way detracts from the bat's exceptional visual appeal. Joe DiMaggio signed pro-model bats dating from his playing career with the New York Yankees are seldom seen at auction and this remains a fine representative example. Full LOAs from PSA for both the bat and signature.
