1946 Gene Hermanski Brooklyn Dodgers Game Worn Jersey (Hermanski LOA)
Gene Hermanski was one of many Brooklyn Dodger players in the post-World War II years who for a time filled the Dodgers' perennial need for a left fielder to play alongside Duke Snider in center field and Carl Furillo in right field. Hermanski did a good job, often while platooning, especially from 1948-50 when he hit at least .290 each season. Hermanski played in the Major Leagues for nine seasons, in 1943, and then from 1946-51 with the Dodgers. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs in the 1951 season and finished his career in 1953 after playing with the Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Overall, Hermanski hit .271 in the Major Leagues. He was with pennant winning Dodgers teams in 1947 and '49. Hermanski wore #22 with the Dodgers, and in Jackie Robinson's early time with the Dodgers when he was the lone African American on Brooklyn, or at times only one of two African American players on the Dodgers, Robinson received death threats that said he would be shot by a sniper on the field. Hermanski, who got along well with Robinson, helped to diffuse the serious tension surrounding the threats by humorously suggesting that all of the players wear Jackie Robinson's #42, in order to "confuse the sniper." Presented is a beautiful, flannel Gene Hermanski game worn Brooklyn Dodgers white home jersey. In the neck are four tags: A Spalding manufacturer's tag; a "Dry Clean Only" tag; a size 42 tag; a flannel tag with G. Hermanski embroidered in blue thread. The front has "Dodgers" in blue script, silver buttons are down the front, and on the outside left tail "46" (for year) is embroidered in blue. The back has Hermanski's "22" in blue felt numerals. The white jersey has slightly faded because of the passage of time. The jersey shows great use, with light stains from dirt in various places. Overall, the jersey is in Excellent condition. It comes directly from Hermanski, with a Letter of Authenticity signed by him, and in a part of Hermanski's LOA he states that he autographed the jersey. After the jersey was consigned, it was washed, and the autograph is no longer visible. Overall, the Hermanski game used jersey comes from 1946 when the great Dodgers dynasty of 1947-56 was already under assembly.
