1946 Jack Dempsey Signed Photo from Gibbons Fight (MINT 9)
Gorgeous signature in flowing, bold green ink. Wearing sweater pre-fight in the ring, this was taken before Dempsey's World Heavyweight Title defense in 1923 against Tommy Gibbons in Shelby, Montana. Dempsey held his title with a unanimous 15-round decision. Wonderful composition: Dempsey scowl, arms defiantly on ropes, exhibiting arms and legs widened to take up space, what in modern terms is called a confident "man-spread." Yet dainty umbrella held to hide the sun. From the fight promoter who got it signed in 1946, and Dempsey kept the other one. The back of the photo reads, "Jack Dempsey autographed two pictures in 1946 in Wichita, Kans. He kept one of these pictures. His remark after looking over set of pictures of his first fight with Gibbons, 'A good set of pictures, may I have this one?'"
