1947 AAFC Championship Commemorative Ball - Browns vs. Yankees - Mac Speedie Collection
Wilson official AAFC football commemorating the Cleveland Browns' 1947 AAFC championship season. This ball originates from the personal collection of Cleveland Browns Hall of Fame wide receiver Mac Speedie and has been consigned to this auction directly by a family member. It is one of twenty lots from the Mac Speedie Collection offered in this auction, all of which were just recently on public display at the National Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The white leather football, which bears the facsimile signature of league commissioner Jim Crowley, has been lettered in black-and-red paint on a side panel: "All America 1947 Conference Champions." The Browns repeated as AAFC champions in 1947 by once again defeating the New York Yankees in the title game, this time by a score of 14-3. Mac Speedie enjoyed his finest overall season in 1947, finishing the year with league-leading totals in receptions (67), yards (1,146), and yards per game (81.9). Those numbers helped lead the Browns to a dominant 12-1-1 record and a second consecutive Western Division title. Souvenirs from the AAFC, especially those commemorating significant victories, are rare. The fact that this particular ball once belonged to a Hall of Fame member of the Browns only adds to its appeal. The ball, which is slightly deflated, displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including uneven toning and minor abrasions. It should be noted that these white balls were produced specifically for night games and given the wear, it is probable that this was a game ball from the season, but not from the AAFC championship game (photos confirm that the standard brown-leather ball was used in that game).
