1947 Brooklyn Dodgers Team-Signed Baseball from Jackie Robinson's Rookie Year
1947 was a breakthrough year for the civil right movement and baseball was at the forefront as Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey bucked convention and signed Jackie Robinson, making him the first African-American ballplayer in the major leagues. Jackie's is one of 25 signatures present on this game-used National League (Frick) baseball. Among the others are Duke Snider, Arky Vaughn and Pee Wee Reese. The Dodgers signatures range from 3-8 regarding condition, with Robinson's rating a 6 out of 10. This baseball originally belonged to a paperboy, who received it as a Christmas tip. The Dodgers would win the pennant that tumultuous season, and Robinson would endure unspeakable insults and death threats while breaking the sport's color barrier for good.
