1947 Hank Gowdy Jersey City/New York Giants Uniform

1947 Hank Gowdy Jersey City/New York Giants Uniform

Historic 1947 New York/Jersey City Giants home jersey worn by Hank Gowdy, one of the greats of the dead ball era and star catcher of the 1914 Miracle Braves (he hit .545 in the 1914 World Series). Worn the following year by Roger Bowman of the Jersey City Giants and the shirt was changed from "New York" across the front to "Jersey City." All else is 100% original. Unique in that the shirt is relevant on TWO team levels. The New York Giants are of course one of the classic teams of the National League. But the Jersey City Giants are a classic minor league team famed for their play at Roosevelt Stadium named for FDR. In the previous year to this shirt, Jackie Robinson first broke the color line for the Montreal Royals versus the Jersey City Giants at the same Roosevelt Stadium. Stunning flannel with the archetypal "Jersey City" stitched across the front in orange & black with matching piping, the familiar colors of the Giants franchise. Verso sports the all-original #3 as worn by Hank Gowdy who wore it as coach for the NY Giants in his final year in the game. His name and number "Gowdy 3" is in the collar on a strip of embroidered felt. Additionally, the inside year and set tag reads, ""1 47." Jersey and pants are by Wilson. Zipper is currently not working but appears to be an easy fix. Usually jerseys are detracted from when sent down to the minors. But in this case "not so fast." Where the player is an important one (Hank Gowdy is a potential HOFer who received HOF votes for 17 years), the teams are two classics forever entwined (NJ/NY), where the minor league franchise is an important one and nearly impossible to find jerseys let alone any other memorabilia from, we believe this one has on some level been enhanced. Obtained directly from the son of perennial minor & Major Leaguer Roger Bowman, who wore this jersey for the 1948 Jersey City Giants. You have the option of turning this back to a New York Giants jersey, but we are fine with it just the way it is.
